Health & Fitness Coaching

Determinants of Behavior

Establishing health and fitness objectives is contingent upon behavior, which is influenced by various elements, such as social support, habits, and personality traits. Each of these factors influences an individual's behavior and their response to various circumstances. The following is a summary of these factors and their potential impact on behavior:

Social Support

Family and friends' social support significantly influences physical exercise habits. Without support from their home or workplace, it is challenging for an individual to sustain a lifestyle modification program. When support is organized into distinct categories, the assistance provided by a spouse or partner is demonstrated to be a significant and dependable indicator of adherence to a program.

Social Support

Support can manifest in several ways, such as through motivation and confidence. Health & Fitness Coaches should be cognizant of the nature of the support a client is receiving and should consistently strive to establish a supportive atmosphere within the exercise setting.

Habit

It's essential to keep in mind that most actions are habits. Health & Fitness Coaches seek to reduce harmful health behaviors and promote beneficial ones. In other words, habits become deeply rooted in an individual's life, often occurring unconsciously or, crucially, without any resistance. The majority of harmful behaviors are deeply ingrained, which presents a difficulty for Health & Fitness coaches trying to break these undesirable habits. Most people find it difficult to simply quit engaging in unhealthy behavior. Instead, if clients replace their bad habits and behaviors with more constructive and positive ones, they have a higher chance of success. By substituting a healthy behavior, one can shorten the transition period involved in phasing out an old habit. For instance, try meditating or listening to music instead of smoking cigarettes.

Personality Traits

Personality traits are fundamental characteristics that individuals possess as part of their psychological makeup. They are responsible for different characteristics in individuals and can be challenging to precisely identify and evaluate. However, studies have demonstrated the association of certain underlying characteristics with health habits. Research has proven a strong association between commitment to physical activity and self-motivation, characterized by the capacity to establish objectives, track progress, and reinforce oneself (Dishman, 1982). The level of self-motivation shown by a client directly impacts the ease with which the Health & Fitness Coach can administer the program and effectively engage the client. A client who is self-motivated demonstrates accountability and actively participates in the program.

Furthermore, conscientiousness is an essential characteristic that indicates a person's propensity for organization and thoroughness. It has been associated with increased levels of fitness and healthy eating habits (Bogg & Roberts, 2004). A conscientious client will be better positioned to adjust and accept their improved lifestyle.
