Emotional Intelligence

The following are the five domains of emotional intelligence as listed by Cherry (2018):

Self-awareness

Self-awareness is the ability of an individual to acknowledge and comprehend their own emotions and how they affect themselves and others. Self-awareness encompasses the understanding that there is a connection between our emotions and actions, as well as being conscious of our individual strengths and weaknesses.

Self-regulation

The appropriate expression of emotion is a component of self-regulation. Self-regulation consists of managing impulses, controlling emotions, adjusting to change, and maintaining commitments. It also relates to understanding how actions taken affect others.

Empathy

The ability to empathize with and understand other people's feelings, wants, and concerns is an essential component of social awareness. People with a strong sense of social awareness should be able to read nonverbal clues about other people's emotions and react accordingly.

Motivation

Intrinsic motivation refers to the internal desire of an individual to fulfill their particular wants and objectives, rather than being influenced by external incentives like money or recognition. They are more likely to be determined, devoted, proactive, and goal-oriented. Those in this group usually possess a strong desire for success and actively seek opportunities for self-improvement.

Social skills

A person with excellent social skills can handle dispute resolution, inspire and influence people, communicate effectively, manage relationships, and work well in a team. A person's social skills encompass their ability to listen attentively, express themselves clearly both orally and nonverbally, take the lead, and collaborate well with others.
